This rare film kinetically documents each member of The Velvet Underground having their cards read at a big apartment party. The tarot reader is continually interrupted in her readings by the chaos created by the characters around her. Though no VU music is heard, this is one of Warhol’s most fascinating films, which he originally shot as background footage for the VU during their “Exploding Plastic Inevitable” performances. (1966, 65 min, 16mm)
The screening will be opened by special guest Anastasia James, associate curator at The Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco. James is well versed on the breadth and influence of Warhol’s work; she formerly worked at The Andy Warhol Museum, and has edited literature on Warhol cinemas.
