This summer, the PUSH PLAY> YBCA Summer Festival is featuring New Frequencies @ YBCA, an adventurous underground music festival featuring both emerging and world class musicians that expand the global landscape.
YBCA will showcase artists within our galleries, as well as in the
Forum, in exciting pairings and collaborations. In the galleries,
musicians will have the opportunity to respond directly to the work of
the eight visual artists commissioned for Wallworks.
In the Forum, international as well as local Bay Area pioneers from the
experimental and avant-garde music scene present an array of sound
styles from around and out of this world.

JACKELINE RAGO & STEVE HOGAN
Virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Jackeline Rago and renowned beat boxer Steve Hogan have been invited by YBCA to collaborate and improvise together, as well as react to the Wallworks
exhibition. Both musicians have a global contemporary perspective on
their respective musical genres: Jackeline Rago is one of the most
accomplished musicians performing the folkloric music of Venezuela, in
particular the Afro Venezuelan rhythms, and Steve Hogan has been
immersed in the worlds of hip-hop, rap, R&B, and Latin jazz—All
musics developed from the profound result of the African diaspora.
Jackeline Rago performs with a multitude of drums, the Venezuelan
cuatro, and her powerful voice, while Steve Hogan uses his body, the
bass, and vocalizes, creating a spectacular rhythmic palate. (YBCA has
invited Jackeline and Steve to react to Odili Donald Odita’s wallworks).
KEV CHOICE & FRIENDS
YBCA has
invited Kev to improvise in response to Odili Donald
Odita’s wallworks.
New Frequencies @ YBCA curated by Isabel Yrigoyen, YBCA

Kev Choice & Jennifer Johns
Before jumping into the fray as a solo artist, Oakland's Kev Choice had already compiled a pretty solid résumé with a background in both classical and jazz, a master's degree in music, and experience as a sideman under Too $hort, Lyrics Born, Michael Franti, and Lauryn Hill. Since emerging under his own name, he has brought a fired-up energy and serious musical chops to the local live scene.
