This summer, the PUSH PLAY> YBCA Summer Festival is featuring New Frequencies @ YBCA, an adventurous underground music festival featuring both emerging and world class musicians that expand the global landscape.
YBCA will showcase artists within our galleries, as well as in the
Forum, in exciting pairings and collaborations. In the galleries,
musicians will have the opportunity to respond directly to the work of
the eight visual artists commissioned for Wallworks.
In the Forum, international as well as local Bay Area pioneers from the
experimental and avant-garde music scene present an array of sound
styles from around and out of this world.

SHIMOMITSU
Through
using organic materials such as log stumps, driftwood, and
unconventional natural objects connected with the earth and the ocean, Shimomitsu
will be controlling the environment with syncopated percussion, surf
guitar and ephemeral vocal sounds which will all be processed through
custom manipulation programs. Shimomitsu is specifically building an
interface for New Frequencies @ YBCA,
which is based on scaling their performance objects to a much larger
scale. Their set is usually around 30 minutes, however, they have
played up to 2 hours, all depending on what is possible, or what is
asked of them. The set is organized in a manner that weaves in and out of
structured beat driven sections and improvised sections according to
the environment. It is a seamless musical set, in other words, they play
start to finish, without pauses or breaks. Their concept for the set
will be based on a crescendo from a very vibrant high energy beginning
to a more ephemeral mathematical approach, riding on the border of
ambiance and pattern recognition through sound. YBCA has invited
Shimomitsu to respond to Leslie Shows and Amanda Ross-Ho’s wallworks.
LISA MEZZACAPPA
“The work of San
Francisco bassist-composer Lisa Mezzacappa demonstrates an admirable
balance of grit and whimsy …” — Time Out New York
Bassist/composer Lisa Mezzacappa
and her ensemble of virtuoso improvisers perform a new series of
wordless chamber songs inspired by the visual work of Israeli artist
Yehudit Sasportas and Los Angeles artist Edgar Arceneaux, both of whose work will be part of Wallworks. The group's
musical world encompasses evocative melodies, abstract sonic landscapes
and playful rhythmic juxtapositions, with influences ranging from Eric
Dolphy to Olivier Messiaen to Blonde Redhead. Cory Wright, clarinets;
John Finkbeiner, guitar; Kjell Nordeson, percussion; Lisa Mezzacappa,
acoustic bass; Tim Perkis, electronics.
