Renée Green speaks about the significant role time-based media has played in her multilayered installations, especially in relationship to her Free Agent Media (dream) production company’s wide-ranging activities. Co-presented with the San Francisco Art Institute’s lecture series, Spheres of Interest: Experiments in Thinking and Action.

Renée Green
Renée Green’s exhibitions, videos and films have been seen throughout the world in museums, galleries, biennials and festivals. Some of these include one-person exhibitions at Portikus (Frankfurt), Centro Cultural de Bélem (Lisbon), Fundació Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona), Contemporary Arts Center (Cincinnati), Vienna Secession, Stichting de Appel (Amsterdam) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles). Other venues include Documenta XI, Johannesburg Biennial, Kwangju Biennale, Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial, Aperto, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Louisiana Museum of Art (Copenhagen), Institute of Contemporary Art (London), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), MACBA (Barcelona), Museum Ludwig (Cologne), UCLA Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
She has contributed writings to Texte zur Kunst, Spex, October, Transition, Public Culture, Frieze, Flash Art and many other publications. Her books include, Negotiations in the Contact Zone (editor, Assírio & Alvim, Lisbon, 2003), Between and Including (Secession/Dumont, Vienna, Germany, 2001), Shadows and Signals (Fundació Antoni Tàpies, Barcelona, 2000), Certain Miscellanies (DAAD, Berlin/De Appel, Amsterdam, 1996), After the Ten Thousand Things (Stroom, The Hague, 1994), Camino Road, (Free Agent Media/Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid,1994), World Tour (Museum of Contempary Art, Los Angeles, 1993).
Her grant residencies have included the DAAD (Berlin) and Arts International (Lisbon). Commissions have included work for the Architectural League of New York/Minetta Brook, FRAC Pays de Loire (Clisson, France) and the American Federation of the Arts with (D.A.P.) Distributed Art Publishers, New York and Caltrans/Morphosis in Los Angeles. Galleries that represent her work are Galleria Emi Fontana, Milan and Gallerie Christian Nagel, Berlin/Cologne.
Green is currently Dean of Graduate Studies and full professor at the San Francisco Art Institute. Previously she was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna between 1997 to 2002, director of Studios at the Independent Study Program, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York from 1996-97 and continues as a guest faculty member of the Independent Study Program since 1991. She was appointed distinguished artist/professor in the Art Department of the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2002 and is a guest faculty member of the Escola de Artes Visuais Maumaus in Lisbon.
