This summer, the PUSH PLAY> YBCA Summer Festival is featuring New Frequencies @ YBCA, an adventurous underground music festival featuring both emerging and world class musicians that expand the global landscape. YBCA will showcase artists within our galleries, as well as in the Forum, in exciting pairings and collaborations. In the galleries, musicians will have the opportunity to respond directly to the work of the eight visual artists commissioned for Wallworks. In the Forum, international as well as local Bay Area pioneers from the experimental and avant-garde music scene present an array of sound styles from around and out of this world.

“Like Brian Wilson or Kevin Shields, [Juana] Molina pulls off the most out-there material with melodies nearly as accessible as conventional pop” — Rolling Stone
Argentine singer Juana Molina defies categorization. Her music features elements of folk, ambient and electronics and she is often compared by critics to Björk, Beth Orton and Lisa Germano. The child of musicians, she originally rose to stardom throughout the Spanish-speaking world as a comedic actress, but after many successful years on television, she made the decision to return to her first love—music. Her live performances combine live loops, effects created on-the-fly and her deft acoustic guitar playing to create a lush and visually spellbinding experience.
"Her songs channel the rhythms of urban life through the seriocomic sensibility of a born entertainer … Neuburg’s musical inventiveness proves a delight throughout." — San Francisco Chronicle
With her array of electronic equipment enhanced by her gorgeous operatic four octave vocal range, Amy X Neuburg is a unique Bay Area musician. Part storyteller, percussionist, and cultural commentator, Amy is constantly pushing the limits of creativity and experimentation with the traditional art form of cabaret. Amy and The Cello ChiXtet (Jessica Ivry, Elaine Kreston and Elizabeth Vandervennet) will perform selections from The Secret Language of Subways—an ‘avant-cabaret’ song cycle for voice, cello trio, electronic percussion and live electronic processing. Conceived largely while riding on New York subways, these dramatically diverse songs use urban imagery and battleground metaphors to address the inane and perpetually unfinished businesses of love and war—with humor, poignancy, and driving energy. Years in the making, this innovative new work has received standing ovations at venues throughout the Bay Area.
