Yerba Buena Center for the Arts designed by Fumihiko Makio, opened in 1993, the same year this star architect received the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize. Throughout his prolific career Maki has designed many other venues for the visual arts initially in Japan and the United States where he received his training, and worldwide since the 1990s. Recent and current projects include the Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo, 2006, in Japan, and the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, scheduled for completion in 2011.
Dr. Ken Tadashi Oshima will lecture about Maki's design evolution and his unique ability to create public spaces featuring forms that maximize variety in the flow of space and funcution. His lecture will deepen our understanding of Maki's contribution to architecture, and place YBCA's building within the larger context of his important contributions. Oshima is Visiting Assistant Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and since 2005 Assistant Professor at the University of Washington. His forthcoming publications include a monograph on Arata Isozaki (Phaidon, 2008). He is curator of the exhibition SANAA: Beyond Borders, Henry Art Gallery, 2007-08.
Betti-Sue Hertz, YBCA's incoming Director of Visual Arts, will introduce the speaker and moderate a conversation between Oshima and the audience.
