Veteran filmmaker Barbara Hammer’s tribute to Claude Cahun, Surrealist photographer, war resister and lesbian, is a superb tribute from one artist to another. Cahun and her lover Marcel Moore experimented with gender roles in their photographs, breaking taboos and creating arresting work. The couple fled France in the late 1930s; they were later imprisoned by the Gestapo because of their resistance activities and much of their photographic work, deemed degenerate by the Nazis, was
destroyed.
