SHEN WEI DANCE ARTS
Map; Re-
“If there is something to write home about in the dance world, it is the startlingly imaginative work of the Chinese-born choreographer Shen Wei.” —The New York Times
Choreographer Shen Wei is the rare genius who uses classical techniques to challenge contemporary thinking, and integrates artistic disciplines with startling simplicity. His vision is epic and large-scale—to experience Shen Wei Dance Arts is to freefall into a sublime world of poetry, painting and sculptural tableaux rendered in contemporary dance. In an era of cynicism and grit, the company stands apart as optimistic and unapologetically beautiful. Re-, Wei’s lyrical response to his journeys through Tibet, is scheduled to coincide with our exhibition The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama, on view in our galleries through March 16. To the haunting chants of an exiled nun, dancers breeze across a Mandala made of confetti, which is destroyed to make way for a moment of stirring stillness.
