William Pope.L: The Black Factory and Other Good Works
Mar 17 – Jul 8, 2007
First Floor Galleries
Housed in a cargo van and inflatable igloo, The Black Factory by William Pope.L is a set of energetic activities that investigate community, race, identity and connection through performance, interactive work and exhibitions. Artist-provocateur Pope.L is known for work that is at once artistically sophisticated, fiercely satirical and entirely accessible. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience The Black Factory in person and view the first major West Coast exhibit of Pope.L’s compelling and controversial work.
The Black Factory will be set in motion with the following weekly events in the YBCA galleries:
141 Demands for a Better World (every FREE First Tuesday and every Friday through the end of June) Participants are encouraged to step up to the microphone and state their demands to create a better world. 141 Demands will travel off-site and broadcast with Neighborhood Public Radio, every Saturday through the end of June.
Black Elvis with Black Object Collection: (Every Sunday through July 1) Participants will be asked to donate objects to The Black Factory that represent “blackness” to them. Black Elvis will make a special weekly appearance.

R. Crumb’s Underground
Mar 17–Jul 8, 2007
First Floor Galleries
YBCA salutes local treasure R. Crumb with an eclectic exhibit of early work, collaborations old and new, and the world premiere of his “spool” drawings. Universally acknowledged as the founder of the underground comic scene, Crumb gained cult popularity for his pioneering Zap Comix and stardom with the Terry Zwigoff documentary Crumb. Extending far beyond comics, the YBCA exhibit shows how his work has grown in philosophical complexity, and highlights his collaborative work, including intimate confessions produced with wife Aline Kominsky-Crumb.

The Collective Foundation
Apr 13 – Jul 8, 2007
Terrace Galleries
The Collective Foundation (CF) is a temporary organization. The concept of curator Joseph del Pesco and artist Scott Oliver, CF relies on the contributions of numerous people who are working to advance art in the Bay Area. During the organization's launch at YBCA, The Foundation will set up temporary headquarters in our galleries. They will hold think-tank discussions, how-to sessions for navigating the CF Web interface, and Shotgun Review Second Saturdays where participants will review as many Bay Area art shows as possible. The furniture for the Foundation’s headquarters will be borrowed from local individuals, modified for the exhibition, and returned at the close of the show—a generous illustration of the benefits of networking. Find out more at www.collectivefoundation.org.
