THE SUPERSTARS NEXT DOOR: A CELEBRATION OF SAN FRANCISCO AMATEUR SEX CINEMA FROM THE '60s
Presented by Jack Stevenson"The only masterpieces that are worth anything are the unintentional masterpieces, the films that get out of control. It's the only hope. My shows in SF reflect this."—Jack Stevenson
Read the entire interview with Jack Stevenson »This three-part retrospective focuses on softcore sex films made in San Francisco in 1968, at that fleeting moment when censorship barriers were collapsing. Just about anyone with a 16mm camera who could convince their friends to take their clothes off could make films and get them shown to a paying public. Thus we look back 40 years and salute the spirited amateurism and glorious lack of professionalism that characterized these movies, which offer a fiercely dated snapshot of the moment.
Thu, Oct 9, 7:30 pm
admission includes both 7:30 and 9:20 screenings
PART ONE: HOME MOVIESWe present four very different shorts, cast with non-actors. Filmed in living rooms and backyards and even after-hours in a porn book shop on 6th Street, they represent the nexus between risqué home movies and hardcore features. Tonight’s films are
Cosmetics Saleslady Comes a Callin’,
Gift for Santa,
Pumpkin at the Halloween Party and
His Father’s Call-Girl. (1968, approx 85 min, 16mm)
Thu, Oct 9, 9:20 pm
PART TWO: UNDERGROUND — THE MEATRACKShot on the mean streets of San Francisco, this gritty tale of a bisexual hustler uses sexploitation as well as underground aesthetics and depicts straight as well as homosexual situations.
The Meatrack is a bizarre milestone of gay cinema. (1968, 65 min, 35mm)
Sat, Oct 11, 7:30 pm
PART THREE: FLAMING STRIPTEASE — A HISTORY OF LIVE SEX PERFORMANCE60’s San Francisco was famed for its wild nightclub scene and this third program departs from purely cinematic considerations to pay tribute to filmed live performance; everything from relatively innocent striptease to more explicit live sex club performances, as well as the curious culture of male spectatorship that accompanies it. (1968, approx 90 min, 16mm)
