The Raw Feed presents work from three artists who explore the issues of globalization and dislocation, focusing on the ways in which we are given sustenance. April Banks, a conceptual artist, creates an interactive rice factory that utilizes rice as both a material and as a subject to examine how the politics around production of the grain has created a hunger crisis in over 30 countries. Wafaa Yasin presents a multidisciplinary installation and video project that takes a critical look at the United Nations and the discontinuities in the messages it feeds us. And Justin Hoover and Chris Treggiari’s “War Gastronomy,” a pop-up café built on a bicycle chassis, connects food with personal narratives of dislocation and conflict through a collection of war-time recipes.
Little is as intimate yet so mundane as the act of feeding ourselves. We must refuel to continue living and this commonality has served as the basis of ritual, connection and artistry for as long as we've lived in societies. The Raw Feed brings together these disparate strands of shared experience together in an exploration of what sustenance means.
The food cart will occasionally venture into the community, and cooking classes and meals will take place wtihin the Front Door Gallery throughout the exhibition. Patrons will be invited to contribute their own recipes and stories to the installation.

Guest artist Dave Sanchez Burr pairs readings from the 1970s Spanish anarchist magazine Ajo Blanco with the dish “Existential Ajo Blanco,” joined by Justin Hoover, Chris Treggiari and special guest Dawn Waleski.
Justin Hoover is a San Francisco performance/visual artist and curator utilizing time-based media, body-based performance, video, installation and photography to investigate issues of identity, duration and immateriality. Justin works as Curator and Gallery Director at SOMArts Cultural Center, focusing on developing collaborative and experimental community-based curatorial projects. In addition to being the founder/director of the Garage Biennale (2004–2009), he is also founder/director of Radical Practices Auction House (2009–present), a project-based auction house that specializes in experiences.
Chris Treggiari's artistic practice strives to investigate how art can penetrate the public realm in a way that can connect wide ranges of people and neighborhoods in a variety of communities. Chris has shown throughout the Bay Area including the SOMArts, Southern Exposure, Queens Nails Annex and the ZERO1 Biennial in San Jose. Chris has received grants from the Puffin Foundation, the San Francisco Arts Commission, the Creative Work Fund, the Arts Commission of San Jose and the Cultural Center for Innovation (in collaboration with Sergio De La Torre). His work has been reviewed in such publications as Art Ltd, The New York Times, the San Francisco Chronicle and Mission Local to name a few.
April Banks is a conceptual artist. Her image-based installations explore issues relating to international trade and commerce, farmer’s rights, and race and human rights. Though the subject of her work varies, the common thread is the disparity of access and economy. Combining sculpture, photography, video and sound, her installations pay keen attention to detail and form. They are the result of deep and immersive research processes, including travel to other countries to gather first-hand experience. April graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Hampton University in Virginia in 1996 and a Master of Science in Environmental Design from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1999. She has exhibited in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, Minneapolis, Cleveland, Daytona Beach, New Hampshire, Maryland, New York and Zurich, Switzerland.
Wafaa Yasin is a Palestinian performance and video artist whose work is extremely visceral and deeply personal. Many of her performances are thematically connected to war and displacement which tie to her drive to educate her audiences about conflicts in the Middle East, especially the current state of Palestine. Yasin graduated from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem in 2005, and received her M.F.A. in Social Practice from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2010. She has been awarded art residencies in Italy, France, Germany and Turkey and has been exhibiting her artwork throughout the world since 2005.
