San Francisco’s preeminent Order of irreverently irreligious nuns returns to YBCA for a spectacular extravaganza of the haute-est couture. Project Nunway V: Dissident Futures brings the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s annual gala back to the place of its glorious birth in the grandest fashion, featuring mistresses of ceremonies Jane Wiedlin of The Go-Go’s, and Sister Roma, the Grand Marshal of San Francisco Pride 2012 and guest judge, Pandora Boxx of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Bay Area funketeers, Planet Booty, Honey Mahogany, and SpacEKrafT will provide the soundtrack as the Sisters turn out their best sashay and shantay, bedecked in original high-fashion (and high-concept) looks created from recycled materials in collaboration with local designers. Futuristic fierceness is the new black this year, so bring your Big Brother because it will be a night of glamour, drama—and, of course, cocktails—that you won’t want to miss.

Events

  • Angel of the Future Dead
    Nov 2, 2013 3:20pm – 5:00pm
    Grand Lobby
    FREE

As part of The Queer Ancestors Project, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will create an altar in the shape of a larger-than-life “Angel of the Future Dead” to commemorate the fact that we are actually the dead of the future. The Angel's skeleton will be constructed of reclaimed wood to remind us that among the glass and steel structures of the future, we will hopefully still have trees and flesh and dirt. The skull will be encrusted with glittering discarded material, and the wings, made of rebar and wire, will provide the scaffolding to hold visitors’ linocut print “wishes,” which will be created during the accompanying hands-on workshop.

The altar is a collaboration between Katie Gilmartin, Postulant Plush, Cobra Teal, and Sandy Rosen.

  • Angel of the Future Dead Print-making Workshop
    Nov 2, 2013 3:20pm – 5:00pm
    Grand Lobby
    FREE with RSVP

In conjunction with the building of the Angel of the Future Dead altar, visitors are invited to envision their own “dissident future,” embodied in an image of what they most wish to welcome into it. Workshop participants will be guided through a gentle meditation, then channel their hearts through their hands to carve a linocut print embodying this wish. These wishes will complete the Angel of the Future Dead by feathering her wings.

This workshop will be presented by Katie Gilmartin, Postulant Plush, and The Queer Ancestors Project.

"Lumbering, overwrought, and wildly self-indulgent...cranked up with a full quotient of sincerity and conviction." —Time Out

Artist Bio

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence is a leading-edge Order of queer nuns. Since their first appearance in San Francisco on Easter Sunday, 1979, the Sisters have devoted themselves to community service, ministry, and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity, and spiritual enlightenment. We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency, and guilt that chain the human spirit.
