Celebrate the art, music and spirit of the tropics with Yerba Buena Center for the Arts! Join YBCA for the opening of its new exhibition, When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art, 1960s to the Present, with a party featuring Brazilian music, Campari cocktails and the fabulous YBCA crowd.

When Lives Become Form: Contemporary Brazilian Art, 1960s to the Present, on view Nov 5–Jan 31, 2009, celebrates Brazil's creative vitality through the works of artists, fashion designers and architects. The exhibition highlights artists and creators who were part of, or inspired by, "Tropicália"—an artistic movement which arose in Brazil during the 1960s around the "originality of the culture of people who live in the tropics."

Tropical Vulture: Live Events with George Kuchar »

While George Kuchar is in residence, YBCA has planned a series of events including an artist talk, screening and two video tapings.

PAUSE :: Tropical Vulture, on view Nov 21–Jan 10, 2009, is a cross-generational project which highlights the artistic influences between Bay Area artist George Kuchar, a Bay Area legend of independent filmmaking, and Mexican artist Miguel Calderón. The exhibition features a preview of their new feature length film titled Conversations with a Tropical Vulture.



PAUSE :: Keywords School, on view thru Nov 15, 2009, is the San Francisco iteration of an interactive multimedia installation by Chinese artist Xu Tan that was launched in 2006 and has been previously presented in London, Stockholm, Guangzhou, New York City and at the 53rd Venice Biennale. Xu Tan's work deals with the hidden motivations and intentions of individuals through a high-tech analysis of their vocabulary.

As part of its ongoing commitment to the diverse artistic voices shaping the performing arts in Africa, YBCA presents one of South Africa's leading choreographers, Gregory Maqoma in his acclaimed solo performance, Beautiful Me. Paying tribute to three master choreographers who have inspired him. Performance with live music (violin, cello, sitar and percussion).

This collaboration with the Erika Shuch Performance Project and Campo Santo explores what it means to be human, what it means to be alive, and what it means to be just another small creature in this great, big world. Featuring Erika Chong Shuch, Sean San Jose and live music by Denizen Kane.

CounterPULSE, a nonprofit center for emerging artists in San Francisco, presents Performing Diaspora, a festival featuring the work of thirteen California dance, music, theater and interdisciplinary artists using traditional forms as a basis for experimentation and innovation. Artists combine hip-hop with Filipino Tinikling, shadow theater with Greek Rembetiko music, the shared roots of Serbian music and flamenco, while addressing themes such as Chicano cultural identity, the politics of poverty and immigration and women's rights. Artists include Charlotte Moraga and Adia Tamar Whitaker (Nov 5–8), Colette Eloi and LA's Contra-Tiempo (Nov 12–15) and Kunst-Stoff and Devendra Sharma (Nov 19–22).

This workshop will focus on bringing language and movement into a cohesive whole that feels organic and necessary. Learn tehniques such as "collision," combining starkly contrasted materials to create surprising new meanings and "animation," enlarging or abstracting a simple word or gesture.

Did you know that the Asian Art Museum's conservators spent 7,500 hours restoring the artworks in this exhibition to their current bedazzling state? Emerald Cities is the first major exhibition outside Asia to explore the rich but little known arts of 19th century Siam and Burma. Many of the 140 stunning artworks include gilded ritual vessels, mother-of-pearl inlaid furniture, colorful paintings, exquisite textiles, delicate ceramics, and more. The Asian Art Museum is the exclusive venue for this exhibition.
