Getting Involved

YBCA is seeking motivated individuals who are interested in arts education to become volunteer members of the Community Engagement Team. See below and contact the appropriate staffer as indicated for more information on these exciting opportunities:

Community Engagement Internships

The Community Engagement Internship Program provides college students and beginning gallery professionals with useful work experience and insight into a non-profit arts organization. Working under several program development professionals, interns will gain key skills and experiences in art education and community organizing through three dynamic program areas in the Community Engagement Department: Center for Community Life, Youth and Educators Program (Young Artists at Work), and Discovering YBCA.

The Community Engagement Intern is responsible for assisting with planning, implementation of the YBCA Community Engagement Education's Center for Community Life Programs. Working in collaboration with the Center's various departments and community advisory bodies, and under the supervision on the Community Engagement Associate, the Community Engagement Center Life and Public Programs Intern is expected to provide logistical and administrative support towards the coordination of complex, thoughtful, multi-faceted community outreach, education, and public programs that connect the art and artists of YBCA with the diverse constituencies of the Center with the wider community.

The Community Engagement Youth and Educators Intern assists in the Young Artists at Work (YAAW) and Educator's programs. YAAW is a paid after school program that endeavors to cultivate future generations of artist-activists by providing up to 30 ethnically diverse public high school students (ages 14-18) with hands-on arts instruction and an intensive overview of cultural activism and art as a social change agent.

If you are interested in being considered for any of these internships please send a resume and letter of interest to:

Center Guides

Through our Discovering YBCA Exhibits program we offer guided and self-guided tours of our galleries to school groups (K – 12) and youth and community-serving organizations. YBCA's Center Guides are on the floor, ready to answer any questions from the public as they tour the galleries, as well as to give additional information on the exhibitions, the artists, and the other programs and events at YBCA. Our Center Guides engage our audience and visitors via impromptu discussions as well as through pre-arranged gallery tours for groups of all ages.

For more information about this unique program, please contact the Discovering YBCA Coordinator, Esther Chang at 415.978.1363.
